Description: The poodles, also known as “caniche”, are the pride of every hairdresser's salon. Can you imagine anything more...French than this? Not surprisingly, the poodle is the national French dog. Elegant, with an air of distinction, tiny, he is the love of his momma, and the perfect gentleman in the family. Even if it is a good watchdog for the family, take care: it is prone to be stolen, because of its majestic appearance and mild personality.

Physical characteristics: the varieties differ only by size, not by anything else.
Standard: 38 cm, 20-32 kg males, 20-27 kg females.
Miniature: 28-38 cm, 7-8 kg.
Toy: 25.4 cm, 2,7-3,6 kg (Teacup: 0.9-1.8 kg).

Temperament: Smart, loyal, proud (its head and tail are all the time carried up) and fun. Very intelligent and active, would’t stay a moment without jumping on its fragile legs. Sometimes it shivers with joy, hoping and expecting you to take it in your loving arms.

Health: genetic diseases, heart disorders, eye problems (cataract, progressive retinal atrophy) that lead to blindness on the long run. Because of the frequent shampooing and hair cutting, poodles may develop skin conditions.

Maintenance/Grooming: Their coat requires grooming at least twice a week, they also need ear and dental care as well. They must be bathed regularly and clipped every 6 to 8 weeks.
If your dog has a show cut, that will need professional grooming. But the most important thing about a poodle coat is that they do not shed and are hypoallergenic because of that.

Training: Poodles are very good for obedience training. Ideal for show dogs and companions, even if, in the beginning, they were used as hunting dogs, because of their obedience skills and quick responses.

Varieties: There are three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy (with other two varieties, teacup and tinytoy).
As for colors: any solid color will make (blues, grays, silvers, browns, cafe-au-laits, apricots, creams, black, silver, red or white). The eyes and the eye-rims are always dark black.

Origin: as a retriever. Given their coiffure, water won’t allow them to sink. But, for long swims, it could be an impediment, that's why the breeders invented their specific coiffure, with little puffs on the tail and legs, to protect their joints from cold water.

Famous dogs: Well, poodles aren't famous with particular exemples, but I'm sure you’ve seen them in every funny movie context, because they are decorative and very rambuctious, this is why they make the pride and joy of every film set.
